A catalogue of broken appointments and threats

This company was a referral we obtained from Rated People. The Gas engineer, Chris responded almost immediately, and we quickly moved on to obtaining quotes and engaging AH Plumbing over the following 7 days. The job was part of a refurbishment to a property which needed a new central heating system which included combi boiler, 7 radiators and all the pipework to go with it. Chris started the job on the specified date and confirmed it would only take a day or two to complete installation, which we thought was ambitious to start with. Chris showed up on the first and second day, then disappeared with the installation only ½ completed without a trace. I contacted him by text after 2 days to be told he had a bereavement. We asked if he could get his company to send another Gas engineer as Chris appeared not in a position to continue with the installation, and was told Chris was contracted to this company and worked alone, so despite working under the umbrella of a Ltd company, along with a number of Gas contractors, no one would take responsibility for a contract he had already started, which for us was not apparent initially and defeated the objective of choosing a large Limited company over a sole trader. In consideration of Chris’s loss, we waited although we had 3 additional contractors working on this refurbishment, who all were unable to continue with their jobs until the central heating was in place which delayed this project by a week. Chris reappeared after 7 days and with the support of 1 of our contractors who had remained on site, completed the installation over the following 3 days and was paid in full. As each contractor returned to complete their jobs, it was noted that some of the pipework leading from the boiler was positioned proud so prevented the re-alinement of the fitted kitchen utilities, which could not be corrected unless the pipe was positioned flush against the wall in the same manner as the other pipes Chris had installed. We waited a month before contacting Chris again in consideration of his loss and he came over to look at it and confirmed he would return the next day to correct it. The next day Chris did not show up and promised to return the following day, again he did not show up, so I contacted him again and he confirmed he would return that Friday. Friday came and again no-show, so I contact Chris again and he promised to do the work the following Tuesday, I asked if he really was going to show up on this date as he had not showed on 3 previous appointments, to which I was told I should get my other contractor, who is not a plumber or registered Gas Safe engineer, to fix it. I pointed out it was his responsibility to fix his work, and if anyone else touched it, it would invalidate the Warranty, to which Chris’s response was to confirm he was not coming back and if we made a complaint by giving him a bad review, he would not honour the 10-year warranty, he had confirmed on his quotation and formed part of basis of our contract. We contacted the business owner Anthony Hingerton, who said he would investigate the matter, but never contacted us or respond to any further calls or messages, so assume he is just not interested. I have complained to Gas Safe as I have also not received by Building Regulation certificate for this installation, which they confirm should have been registered by law within 28 days, so they are also looking into this matter. Valiant have also confirmed Chris has only register 1-year warranty not 5 years and this was done, prior to Chris threatening us and telling us to leave him alone. So Chris, you got your wish. I hate threats, and contractors who bail out on their responsibilities!! We have a further 2 refurbishments projects to work on and would not be contacting this company again!!
